Financial Support

MUII has a number of fellowships. All of them provide stipends, tuition waivers, and graduate student insurance for 1-4 years. Currently, two fellowship programs offer a full 4-year support. In addition, there are two 1-year fellowship programs for incoming students who are expected to identify a dissertation adviser before the fellowships expire for continuing support through faculty’s funded projects. Many faculty members have sizable funding for talented students.

Informatics Institute Fellowship Program:

To ensure all incoming students receiving financial supports and tuition waivers for at least first year, the Institute has a number of 1-year fellowships which provide “buffering” financial support for students who are admitted to the program but not sponsored by faculty’s funded projects.  MUII Admission Committee will recommend prospective students to the institute in March and October annually. The criteria will be based on student’s academic records (GPA, quality of graduated institution(s), publication records), GRE score, TOEFL score (international students), research statement, recommendation letters, and other credentials.

Eligibility: All new applicants of MUII

National Library of Medicine Fellowship Program:

The objectives and goals of the Biomedical and Health Informatics Research Training Program (BHIRT) at the University of Missouri are to provide:

  • Mentored research training in informatics in academic research
  • A foundation of instruction in core competencies of the body of informatics knowledge
  • Exposure to the breadth of areas of investigation that compose informatics.

Participation in collaborative informatics research programs under senior researchers is the primary training activity of the BHIRT Program. This includes publications and presentations at national meetings. The three broad focal areas of informatics research include:

  • Bioinformatics and computational biology
  • Health information systems, services and policy
  • Health informatics for populations and individuals

Other training activities may be summarized as consisting of formal degree programs, additional BHIRT core courses and requirements, research seminars and journal clubs and experiential training in the practice of informatics.

There are nine pre-doctoral fellow positions in the BHIRT program. All fellows are expected to enrolled in the Informatics Ph.D. program starting in 2008.

Eligibility: US citizens or permanent residents

News: We have openings for prospective doctoral students in health informatics track.

Life Sciences Fellowship Program (LSF):

The LSC has an NIH funded T32 training program known as the Life Sciences Fellowship Program (LSF). The LSF is a campus-wide program that supports MU life sciences trainees with four-year stipends including tuition and fees. The Institute will nominate candidates to the LSF Program from their applicant pools. A selection committee will recommend acceptances based upon undergraduate training, GRE scores, and research interests and career goals.
